Rehab & Adaptive Yoga
Additional treatments are utilized at North Florida Chiropractic Center to help maximize your complete recovery.
Besides spinal and extremity manipulation treatments, different types
of therapies are managed. These treatments help reduce edema and
swelling, improve circulation, decrease pain, decrease inflammation,
produce endorphins and help restore and maintain proper biomechanics.
The types of therapies we offer are:
- Hot and Cold Packs
- Electrical Stimulation
- Flexion/Distraction
- Massage
- Myofascial Release
- Joint Mobilization
Proper rehabilitation is a necessary component for complete recovery
from many types of injuries. The goal of rehabilitation is to restore
proper function and eliminate activity intolerances before the onset of
disabling, chronic pain syndromes. Weak muscles, if left unchecked, can
add additional stress on the joints and make the condition worse.
Our program is designed to help accelerate the healing process and
provide stability and strength within the injured area. Without proper
rehabilitation of an injury, complete functional restoration cannot be
achieved.
My personal testimony is what stimulated me to develop an adaptive yoga program.
In 1993, I underwent reconstructive knee surgery in order to repair
damage from a skiing accident. This resulted in ten years of having to
wear a knee brace to do anything, unable to perform any physical
activity without pain or swelling. I couldn't even walk a 100 yards. I
had also torn both rotator cuffs and separated my left A/C joint, not
being able to lift my arm above my shoulder or even rollover in bed. I
developed muscular atrophy of both shoulder girdles and my entire right
leg.
In 2003, at age 43, I found my physical body had been ravaged due to
the multiple injuries I sustained to my shoulders, knees and ankles.
But after only 6 months of adaptive yoga, at 2-3 sessions per week, my
body was restored to 98% of my pre-injury status. My orthopedic surgeon
was shocked. Six months of yoga had reversed a lifetime of damage! Now
I can play soccer with my children, golf, and even hike in the
mountains.
The program is based in Hatha yoga, which has been used for over 5000 years for the physical restoration of the body.
Our adaptive yoga instruction is the most effective form of physical
rehab I have experienced in the 17 years of managing a rehab practice.
Anyone that has sustained injuries from an auto, work, sports surgery
or any physical injury will benefit.
This class is specially designed for injury rehabilitation. By
utilizing therapy balls, blocks, chairs and straps, even the most
inflexible person can gently participate.
Our adaptive program is custom tailored to meet the individual need and
injury of each patient. It is so uniquely designed that anybody from
age 5 to 105 can do it. Together with Ron Dubinski, a certified Bikram
instructor with over 40 years of experience, we team-teach the classes.
Board certified acupuncturist, Teresa Rizzo, is available to our
patients considering or requesting acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture
is highly effective for treatment of symptoms and pain control.
Acupuncture strengthens and improves overall body function, enhances
recuperative power and immunity, and enables the patient to regain and
enjoy physical and emotional health.
Teresa coordinates individualized treatment plans for each patient, encouraging a balanced state of health.
